Figure out what's next on the to do list. So far, Helix has set the group to do whatever they want, and Vagelspar has given them good news about his mission. They only need to get the eye of A blue dragon, not an adult one... But is that really easier?
Having each been hired for the same job, our party members found themselves at the Fehru Crypt located outside the city of Trelmiir. Voyenya had been directly hired for her services, Fenris had found word of the job in a tavern, and Lucy and Amorus had come across the listing on a job board. Their task was to help a rather pompous man by the name of Kadrel Vanskeb locate an ancient object within the small crypt before them. He had hired them at the behest of his employer, the Irwin Institute, to protect and lead him through the crypt. From the outset, none of the party members seemed to be liked by the man and his attitude toward each of them only soured further and further. The crypt guards allowed them access to the crypt where they found a small room with several opened caskets including the one in the center back of the room. After some brief investigation, it was determined that the center casket belonged to Haviis Fehru, the namesake of the crypt, who had been carelessly tossed out of his resting place and subsequently crushed a bit under the heavy stone door of his coffin. What was more interesting was that there seemed to be small footprints leading into and out of the coffin. Upon even further inspection a door revealed itself to the player at the back of the coffin. They decided that since their goal was to find this ancient relic that they had better continue into the crypt to find it. The next room was full of chests. As they entered they heard one, and just barely saw one, close quickly. With some out-of-the-box thinking, Lucy was able to open the chest and tie up its occupant. A goblin by the name of Garfunkle had been trying to hide in the chest before the party entered. After some interrogation, trading of goods, and arguing it was found out that Garfunkle was not alone and that his “mistress” had been looting the chest room for quite some time. All the chests were empty and it was decided that if they were to complete their mission they would have to face this “mistress” and take back the relic. With much whining on Kadrel’s part, the party continued into the cave system behind the crypt via a small tunnel. Once their they encountered many enemies of the goblinnoid and knoll varieties as they snuck through the tunnels. Eventually, they came to the main chamber, having bypassed some goblin guards, where they met the “Mistress” and more underlings. A hag was behind the theft of the crypt and had made her home in the cave systems. After a long and almost life-ending battle on Fenris’ part, the party emerged victorious with the relic intact. They relayed what had transpired below to the crypt guards who sent word for more reinforcements to completely search and clear out the caves.
After getting less than expected from Mr. Vaskeb, although they are lucky they got anything at all, the group decided to try and make a little more money together. As they shopped they kept an ear and eye out for work. Eventually, they came across some news that a local man had gone missing and his wife was willing to pay what she could for someone to find him. The party decided that such a noble cause was worth the investigation and after asking around made their way to the poorer side of town and the home of Lori Calway. After being permitted to enter the party soon learned the circumstances surrounding Mr. Calway’s disappearance. According to his wife, he had ventured into the Grimnoque Caves in search of an old family heirloom that had presumably been left there after his grandfather disappeared in the same place a few decades back. Mrs. Calway begged the group to help her and offered them every bit of gold she had. The party accepted the quest and began by asking around the neighborhood about the legend of Mr. Calway’s grandfather and if anything strange had been happening at the caves in recent years. After a while, it was determined that Mr. Calway was not the only person to have disappeared near the caves recently and rumors of something terrible living in the caves had been around for quite some time. So the party hired a stable boy to take them to the caves. On the way, they narrowly avoided a goblin ambush and made it safely to the caves. Once there the party left the stable boy to guard the horses some distance away while they snuck up to the cave entrance. Amorus sent her owl Orion inside to scope out the area. He saw several goblins, gnolls, and a single dire wolf. After a brief and hushed discussion, the party decided that luring a few of the cave’s occupants out first would be the most beneficial. Using Orion as bait they were able to lure two knolls out of the cave. After a bit of trouble and being told to “shh” by one of the knolls they were able to render them both unconscious and interrogate one of them after waking him. They learned there were a few more rooms to the cave and that the “boss” was asleep and everyone would try to avoid waking him at all costs. With this new information, they began their descent into the cave leaving the gnoll alive but tied up outside the cave. They ‘quietly’ fought their way through the first room, snuck through the second, and found themselves in the third room where there was still more fighting to be had. They realized that the boss’ room was behind a large stone blocking off what had to have been a smaller room than what they stood in. After a long ‘quiet’ battle all the knolls and goblins were taken care of for the moment and they proceeded to the final room. There they found Mr. Calway chained up and malnourished. They were able to unchain him but not before the ‘boss’ woke up.
After a brief argument in the holding cell part of the cave the group decided that attempting to run would almost certainly result in death. Instead they attempted to quickly heal Mr. Calway so he could stand on his own and steeled themselves for another fight. As they quietly entered the main chamber again the party did not make it far before the "boss", a huge ogre came out of his now opened room at the back of the cave. He roared waking any of goons that had been magically put to sleep. Another fight broke out during which some of the goblins that had been previously incapacitated entered to join. After a hard fought battle the group was able to defeat the ogre and recover the missing the heirloom of the Calway family. They left the cave with Mr. Calway and made their way back to the stable boy who gladly took them back to town. On the way Amorus was able to heal Mr. Calway a bit further to ensure he would survive his ordeal. They got back to the Calway home where they received their reward of the Calway's whole life's savings. After some of it being returned to the couple the group moved on to find a tavern and another possible job.
Honestly, I don't remember much of the story because I didn't take good notes...
Post-January 15th...
The party awakes the next morning in the Varsk household, ready to investigate the unnatural presence of the Reed family. They quickly investigated the damage done to the Varsk house from previous nights and determined something had been clawing at the walls and left behind rotted flesh. With this in mind they made their way through the small wooded area in-between the two family farms. There they encountered a pack of dire wolves and were able to dispatch them. They continued to the Reed family farm where they found the land and buildings had been obviously abandoned. Upon entering the house Fenris sensed that something was not right and alerted the others. Amorus sent Orion ahead of them only to quickly lose her connection with him. The party quickly retreated from the house and were soon followed by a zombie gnoll. The gnoll called out and three human zombies rose from the ground. These three were quickly identified as the Reed family. A fight ensued and soon a red frog like creature came out of the house to join the fray. After a rather difficult battle the group was victorious. Lucy was able to identify the frog like creature as a slaad and recalled some important information in regards to their habits and how they reproduce. Unfortunately, she suspects that both Fenris and Farkus have been infected with slaad embryos. After a quick search of the grounds the group was able to find a cart in order to carry the bodies back with them as well as some money, the deed to the Reed family farm, and a spell scroll. They decided to rest for a moment and double check the rest of the area before heading back to the Varsk family.
Having taken care of the seemingly undead creatures, and a red slaad, at the Reed family home the Travelers returned to the Varsk family to ensure their safety. Taking with them the bodies of all the deceased, and the deed to the Reed farmstead, the group made their way back to the guild. When they were close enough to the city Farkus led them to a secret entrance to avoid bringing bodies through the front gates. As Lucy and Amorus ventured into the tunnel entrance Farkus and Fenris stayed with the cart. Farkus bid his farewell to Fenris saying that he was called to be elsewhere but wished Fenris and the rest the best of luck. Lucy returned to the cart as Amorus went into the guild’s main hall to brief Helix on their arrival. She presented Helix with the vile of rot found on the Varsk farm and told him about the bodies waiting in the cart. They sent men to fetch the bodies and send for the remaining party members. Upon seeing the party short a member, Helix, after inquiring about it, then said he had another job of sorts for the party. The bugbear “Bror” was introduced to them as a new member of their team per Helix’s instructions. The group welcomed Bror, hesitantly, then recounted their adventure. After telling Helix all that happened on the Reed farm, and giving him the deed to the property, the party was generously rewarded with magic items, gold, and platinum. Helix sent the four on their way with the promise that they would be contacted eventually but left to their own devices until then. So, with their new member in tow, the group split up to find Farkus so he and Fenris could be healed from the slaad’s bite. Amorus took Bror to the Loyal Eagle’s Rest to search while Fenris and Lucy went directly to the temple district. At the tavern, Amorus talked to Vickie only to find out that they had just missed Farkus leaving. Vickie was sure he was heading for the temple so the pair decided to stay at the tavern and catch up while they waited for their companions. At the temple, Fenris and Lucy found Farkus already being healed by one of the priests of Jindar. Relieved to see him healed, the pair told him what had happened at the guild and tried to offer him his share of the gold. He refused and bid them farewell once more leaving Fenris to be treated by the priest. Eventually, the group all made it to the tavern where drinks were had and so was talk. After finishing their drinks and conversations they decided to restock on some items, once again splitting up, and agreed to meet at the interesting “Door of Store” which they had seen and Vickie had told them about. After restocking some supplies the four made their way to the odd new shop in town. A single door in an empty plot with a very familiar-looking cart next to it. The three original members excitedly clambered to be first inside and were met with the familiar face of Duke von Erwin. After some conversing and difficult decision making the party left the store with interesting magic items. They returned to Vickie’s tavern for the night deciding that the next morning they should see Vagalspar at the college to pick up his quest for a blue dragon eye. After a good night’s rest the group set off to Mockmora, which they found out was downsizing and moving, to speak with the old wizard. They entered his office, introducing their new member, and told him they would take up his quest if he was still in need of the eye. The old wizard said he was but that the task had changed slightly and gave them details on the changes.
